On 20 December we held the last event of 2022, a Book Club on Irene Solà’s Canto jo i la muntanya balla (When I Sing, Mountains Dance). We were lucky enough that the translator of the novel, Mara Faye Lethem, joined us for the event.
The talk focused on matters such as the style in which the book is written, which really catches the reader’s attention, as well as the possible translation challenges when it comes to the use of different languages in the novel. Mara Lethem also highlighted some of the questions she had herself when starting with the translation, such as if all of the events happened in a present time or not, and she also insisted on how challenging it was for her to express the voice of the mountain that can be found in the novel.
