Last Thursday we enjoyed the 2022 Queen Mary Annual Catalan Lecture with the historian Professor David Abulafia, on Catalans in the Medieval Atlantic.
He focused on the existence of trade by Catalan ships, often from Mallorca, in Atlantic areas, such as Morocco and the Canary Islands and even up north, as well as on the well documented presence of Catalans –mainly Majorcans– in the Canary Islands during the 14th century, many of which were missionaries.
The attendees found the talk fascinating and they had the chance to ask questions to Professor Abulafia, such as whether there is any reminiscence of the Majorcan presence in the Canaries, among other matters.
