Last week, the launch of the English translation of Dolors Miquel’s El guant de plàstic rosa (The Pink Plastic Glove), organised by the Centre for Catalan Studies and Tenement Press, took place at Queen Mary.

Professor John London, Director of the Centre for Catalan Studies, was invited to give a talk on Catalan nationalism at City of London School on 5 March.

On 1st Feburary, Dr Josep-Anton Fernàndez visited Queen Mary University of London to give the 2023 Joanot Martorell Lecture, organised in association with the Insituto Cervantes London.

Josep-Anton, who taught at Queen Mary from 1993 to 2006 and who founded the Centre for Catalan Studies, gave a paper entitled “An Empty Origin: Migration and Mourning in the Catalan Literature of the Argentine Diaspora”.

On 18 December the last event organised by the Centre for Catalan Studies in 2023 took place: a new edition of the Queen Mary Catalan Book Club, in which we discussed Teresa Solana’s The Sound of One Hand Killing (L’Hora Zen: Un crim refinat). We were lucky enough that the author joined us for the event.

Julieta, the Catalan singer who is giving a concert in London today along with the Catalan band The Tyets, visited Queen Mary yesterday in an event organised by Institut Ramon Llull and Bona Gents.

More than 50 people, including Catalan students from 16 different universities across the United Kingdom and Ireland, participated in a panel discussion on the Catalan film Suro yesterday. They had been able to watch the film thanks to an activity organised by Institut Ramon Llull in conjunction with the universities of Sheffield, Bristol, Cardiff, Glasgow, and Liverpool.

Maria Ribas Tur and Cristòfol Tripiana Traver, Catalan teachers at Cardiff University and Queen Mary, University of London delivered an online session last week for students of Catalan Language at the Universitat de València on what teaching Catalan abroad is like.

This year’s Queen Mary Annual Catalan Lecture was the first to focus on architecture. We counted on the presence of Carles Baiges to deliver this very special lecture. Carles is a Catalan architect and a member of Lacol, a cooperative architecture studio in Barcelona.

On October 11, the launch of Gemma Ruiz Palà’s novel Wenling’s, organised by the Centre for Catalan Studies together with Héloïse Press and Romancero Books, was held at Queen Mary University of London.

On 13 September, several scholars and journalists gathered at Queen Mary for the conference “Catalan Media: Past and Present”, organised by the Centre for Catalan Studies.
