Professor John London, Director of the Centre for Catalan Studies, was invited to give the opening lecture to launch the new Catalan Studies courses at the University of Edinburgh. The topic of this lecture was “Catalan Culture and the Multilingual Translation of the Image”.

Last month we were able to enjoy an evening of theatre in Catalan at Queen Mary as part of the conference ‘Catalan Theatre in English: Past, Present & Future’.

Our PhD student Charlotte Byrne (@CharladyByrne) gave a talk in Catalan at the Ateneu de Bétera, Valencia (@ateneubetera) entitled ‘Anarquisme, feminisme i lesbianisme en la guerra del trenta-sis al trenta-nou’.

The conference ‘Catalan Theatre in English: Past, Present & Future’ took place on 12 and 13 September at Queen Mary University of London. Several academics, translators, directors and playwrights from England, Wales, Scotland, the United States, and Catalonia reflected on their work and experience and shared their perspectives on a wide range of topics related to Catalan theatre.

Gemma Bartolí, postdoctoral researcher at the Universitat de Girona, will carry out a stay at the Centre for Catalan Studies. She will spend three months at Queen Mary University of London developing aspects related to her research on Catalan lyric theatre.

On 5 July, a group of Year 10 students from different schools visited Queen Mary to learn more about the university and to discover some of the options available to them if they decide to study a languages degree. After a campus tour and a session on how languages can be useful for their careers, they had the chance to attend a series of language taster classes, including German, Russian, Portuguese, and Catalan.

Last week, the 38th International Conference for Catalan Teachers organised by Institut Ramon Llull took place at Universitat Jaume I in Castelló de la Plana.

The International Symposium Jordi de Sant Jordi, 600 anys: «Tots jorns aprench e desaprench ensems» took place at the Universitat de València last month and QMUL members were there to present their papers.
