Last month, the first session of the Queen Mary Catalan Book Club of 2025 took place. This time, we discussed Iolanda Batallé’s I’ll Do Anything You Want (Faré tot el que tu vulguis). We were lucky enough to be joined by the author for this event, as well as the translator of the English edition, Martha Tennent.

The Institut Ramon Llull, the institution that works for the promotion of the Catalan language and culture abroad, recently organised a new edition of the Introductory Seminar to the Audiovisual World and Subtitling (Seminari d’introducció al món audiovisual i la subtitulació), aimed at current and former Catalan language students who have an interest in this field.

Last week the 2024 Joanot Martorell Lecture, organised in collaboration with Instituto Cervantes London, took place at Queen Mary. On this occasion, we had the pleasure of being joined by Dr Rhiannon McGlade, former Director of the Centre for Catalan Studies. The title of her lecture was “Irascible Ink: Satire & Subversion in Catalan Feminist Comic Art”.

The Annual Catalan Lecture 2024 focused on music. The event took place last month at the Octagon, Queen Mary University of London, with performances by soprano Louisa Beard, pianist Clive Pollard and cellist Laura Peribáñez.

Last weekend, the LXIX Anglo-Catalan Society Annual Conference was hosted by the University of Glasgow and the University of Strathclyde.

Professor John London, Director of the Centre for Catalan Studies, was invited to give the opening lecture to launch the new Catalan Studies courses at the University of Edinburgh. The topic of this lecture was “Catalan Culture and the Multilingual Translation of the Image”.

Last week, Valencian journalist and sociologist Toni Mollà launched his book Sobretot, que perda el Madrid at Queen Mary in an event organised by ValenciansUK and CatalansUK.

Last week, Valencian sociologist Alexis Lara Climent, coordinator of “La Comarca Científica” launched his book Negacionisme de gènere: Auge, expansió i mites de l’antifeminisme at Queen Mary in an event organised by ValenciansUK.

Last month we were able to enjoy an evening of theatre in Catalan at Queen Mary as part of the conference ‘Catalan Theatre in English: Past, Present & Future’.

Our PhD student Charlotte Byrne (@CharladyByrne) gave a talk in Catalan at the Ateneu de Bétera, Valencia (@ateneubetera) entitled ‘Anarquisme, feminisme i lesbianisme en la guerra del trenta-sis al trenta-nou’.
