Applications are invited to study for a Phd in Catalan Studies at Queen Mary University of London. The Centre for Catalan Studies is the only research centre of its kind in the UK and constitutes an ideal place for doctoral study.
Students can draw on the expertise of permanent staff members of the university working in Modern Languages, Comparative Literature, Linguistics, Fine Art, and History. In addition to the Catalan material in Queen Mary Library, students have access to all the main London archives and libraries, including the Gili Collection at Senate House and the wealth of Catalan manuscripts and publications in the British Library.
Recent Phds at Queen Mary have covered a wide range of subjects:
– Catalan in Alghero
– Language policy and language contact in Barcelona
– Humour in the narrative of Pere Calders
– Translating queer Catalan drama for the Irish stage
– Constructing feminine poetics in Maria-Mercè Marçal
If a candidate is accepted to study for a Phd at Queen Mary they will be eligible to apply for a studentship from the Institut Ramon Llull. This will cover their fees and living expenses for 36 months of study.
